TL;DR

  • These 50 hard work quotes are original lines written by the New Dynamics team. Use them freely in cards, team channels and meetings, with no risk of a wrong attribution.
  • Two famous lines are included with their checked origins. The saying about hard work and luck is often credited to Thomas Jefferson, but the earliest known source is Coleman Cox in 1922.
  • A quote is a starting point. Thank hard workers by naming what they did and what it made possible, and never use sayings about effort to excuse long hours.

Most of us know someone who quietly carries more than their share. They stay with the difficult problem, check the detail and finish what others started. A good line about hard work can be a way to tell them that you noticed.

This article gives you 50 hard work quotes and sayings, grouped by theme. It adds two famous lines whose origins we have checked, explains what “work hard, play hard” means and shows how to use a quote so that it lands as thanks and not as pressure.

A quote is a start. To make appreciation a habit, see how New Dynamics employee recognition helps teams thank each other for specific work.

About these lines: the 50 numbered sayings were written by the New Dynamics editorial team. They are not quotations from famous people. Sayings about effort have been written many times, so we claim care, not certainty, about originality. Use and adapt them freely. You do not need to credit anyone.

What makes a good quote about hard work?

A good line about hard work does three things.

  • It honours effort without worshipping hours. Working hard and working long are different things.
  • It connects effort to purpose. People work hard for a reason: a customer, a colleague, a craft or a family.
  • It fits the person. A line that suits a sales floor may embarrass a quiet analyst.

The best way to use any of these lines is beside a specific thank you. We come to that below.

Two famous quotes about working hard, checked

Famous lines about hard work are everywhere, and many carry the wrong name. Here are two that the researchers at Quote Investigator have traced.

“I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work, the more of it I seem to have.” You will often see this credited to Thomas Jefferson. Quote Investigator's study of the luck and hard work saying reports that no version of it has been found in Jefferson's writings. The earliest close match it found is by Coleman Cox, in a 1922 collection called Listen to This.

“Two per cent. is genius and ninety-eight per cent. is hard work.” This is the earliest form that Quote Investigator found for Thomas Edison's famous ratio, in an 1898 issue of The Ladies' Home Journal. Its article on the genius ratio says the better-known split of one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration appeared in print a few years later, and that it is reasonable to credit Edison with both.

The lesson is simple. Before you put a famous name beside a line on a slide or a poster, look for a source that shows where and when it was said. If you cannot find one, present the line without a name or use an original one.

What does “work hard, play hard” mean?

“Work hard, play hard” means putting full effort into work and then enjoying your free time just as fully. A team that uses the phrase is usually saying that it expects intensity and that it celebrates together.

The variant “work hard and play harder” puts even more weight on the celebration.

The phrase has two sides in a job advertisement or a culture deck.

  • At its best, it describes a team that commits to ambitious goals, takes real breaks and marks its wins.
  • At its worst, it is code for long hours followed by compulsory socialising. That can exclude people who have caring responsibilities, who do not drink or who simply recover best on their own.

If you use the phrase, say what you mean by it. Which hours are normal? Is the “play” optional, varied and held at times everyone can manage? If you are a candidate and you see it, ask those questions at the interview.

Using hard work quotes well: instead of a generic poster telling people to work harder, send a specific thank you that names the person, the work and the result.
The same sentiment, turned from pressure into appreciation.

How to thank a hard worker: go further than the quote

A quote on its own can feel generic. Thanks that people remember has four parts.

  1. Name the person. Thanks to “the team” is pleasant. Thanks to a person is felt.
  2. Say what they did. “You rebuilt the forecast over two evenings, and checked every formula.”
  3. Say what it made possible. “Because of that, the board took the decision in one meeting.”
  4. Do it soon. Appreciation loses force with every week that passes.

Then add the quote, if you still want one. Number 23 would suit the example above.

Two more points matter.

  • Recognise the quiet ones. The loudest effort gets noticed first. Look for the people who prevent problems, as well as the people who fix them in public.
  • Take something away. If someone has carried too much, thanks should come with relief: a deadline moved, a task reassigned or a day off. See quote 26.

Our guide to expectancy theory explains why this matters. People keep putting in effort when they believe that good work will be noticed and will lead somewhere.

When praising hard work goes wrong

Sayings about hard work have a shadow side. Used carelessly, they turn overwork into a virtue.

The health evidence is sobering. In 2021 the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization published estimates on long working hours, heart disease and stroke. The study concluded that “working 55 or more hours per week is associated with an estimated 35% higher risk of a stroke and a 17% higher risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, compared to working 35-40 hours a week”.

In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive's Demands standard for managing work-related stress says the organisation should provide employees with “adequate and achievable demands in relation to the agreed hours of work”.

So keep these guardrails.

  • Praise outcomes and care. Do not praise hours, late emails or cancelled holidays.
  • Do not use a quote to answer a workload problem. If someone says they have too much to do, a poster about perseverance is an insult. Change the workload.
  • Watch who gets called hardworking. Make sure you are not rewarding visibility over contribution, or presence in the office over results.
  • Model the limit. Leaders who praise rest and then send messages at midnight are believed for what they do.
Four guardrails when praising hard work: praise outcomes and care, not hours; fix the workload before quoting perseverance; check who gets called hardworking; and model the limit yourself.
Keep praise for effort from turning overwork into a virtue.

Where to use hard work quotes

  • Thank-you cards and messages, with a specific sentence of your own.
  • Team meetings, as a one-line opener before you recognise someone's work.
  • Work anniversaries and leaving cards, where a line about dedication fits naturally.
  • Project close-outs, to mark the effort before everyone moves to the next thing.
  • Your own desk. A line that helps you begin is worth keeping in sight.

Skip them in performance reviews. A review needs evidence and examples, and a saying adds neither. See performance reviews: the good, the bad and the ugly.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good quote about hard work?

A good quote about hard work honours effort and links it to purpose. For example: “Hard work is attention, repeated”, or “Effort is the one part of the result you fully control.” Both are original lines from this article, and you can use them freely.

What is a good saying for a hard worker?

Try “You did not just finish it. You finished it properly”, or “Thank you for the care you put into the parts that nobody sees.” Add a sentence of your own that names what the person did and what it made possible.

Who said “the harder I work, the luckier I get”?

It is often credited to Thomas Jefferson, but Quote Investigator reports that the saying has not been found in his writings. The earliest close match it found is by Coleman Cox in 1922: “I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work, the more of it I seem to have.”

What does “work hard, play hard” mean?

It means putting full effort into work and enjoying free time just as fully. In a workplace, it usually signals high intensity and a social culture. Ask what the normal hours are and whether the social side is optional before you treat it as a good sign.

How do you compliment someone on their hard work?

Name the person, say exactly what they did, say what it made possible and do it soon after the event. “You rebuilt the forecast and checked every formula, so the board decided in one meeting” means more than “great job”.

Can I use these hard work quotes freely?

Yes. The 50 numbered lines were written by the New Dynamics editorial team. You can use and adapt them in cards, presentations, newsletters and team channels without asking permission or adding a credit.

Your next step: thank one hard worker this week

  1. Think of one person whose effort has gone unremarked.
  2. Write two sentences: what they did, and what it made possible.
  3. Add a line from this list if it fits.
  4. Send it today, and ask whether anything can come off their plate.
